v Abstract :

The world is slowly beginning to wake up and realize that improving the political and economic status of women is one of the most cost-effective ways to address the challenges that the world is facing. As caretakers, new generations' bearers, and society's architects, women have the favorable social capacities to create a better future for all. In 2005 a study was planned by the Millennium Project taking into account women issues and to "em-gender" the 15 Global Challenges. This session will revisit them through some key-issues related to the status and contribution of women for the future. There is much to celebrate: the gender gap in primary and secondary education has been reduced and the increased participation of women in the economy has been one of the most significant factors to change women's lives over the past 30 years. However, women remain highly disadvantaged in many sectors and there are still many challenges to be addressed. Forecasting women-related issues means help creating a better future for society as a whole.

v Abstract :

The interdependence of economic growth and technological innovation has been the most significant engine of change for the last 200 years, but unless we improve our economic, environmental, and social behavior (first and foremost gender-equity), the next 200 years could be difficult. The 15 Global Challenges identified by the Millennium Project aim to provide a framework to better understand the present and assess prospects, and offer some thoughts and resources to help decision-making.

This presentation will focus specifically on the interdependency of the challenges and therefore of the policies addressing them, assessing specifically issues related to gender-equity. It will also propose the use of the collaborative Real Time Delphi process to improve the understanding of gender-sensitivity; identify emerging gender-related issues, policies and strategies; and organizations that might help address them; and help prioritize efforts for accelerating gender-equality and improving the status of women worldwide.

v Abstract :

Before talking about the Global Millennium Prize youngsters' future vision for women, as a Mexican and a Latin-American, I would like to comment on certain statistics, cultural traditions and attitudes that are common in our countries.

The Latin-American countries, as all of you know, were colonized by Europeans and mainly by Spaniards.  Thus, culturally speaking we have a strong relationship with catholic religion, with strong boundaries for obedience and submission. Furthermore, Mexicans, Central Americans and Peruvians also have a great legacy from our Pre-Hispanic cultures, where women were treated equally as men.

So we, Latin-American women, are a strange mixture of obedience and empowerment.

The following topics will be detailed in this presentation: vote, work, violence, poverty, education, Global Millennium Prize, Millennium Project 15 Global Challenges and UN 8 Millennium Development Goals.
